General Statement of Job
Under the direction of the Coordinator of Transportation, the Activity Bus Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the fleet in a safe manner. Within the framework of the policies of the District Board of Trustees for the School District of Pickens County and applicable laws, rules, and regulations of the State of South Carolina, the Activity Bus Maintenance Technician is to maintain the School District of Pickens County Activity Bus Fleet in order to transport students safely, along with any other duties assigned by the Coordinator of Transportation or the Superintendent.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Inspect fleet for safety concerns.
- Maintains/orders inventory parts for minor repair of fleet.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs.
- Schedule/maintain routine service on fleet.
- Monitor tires and replace when necessary on fleet.
- Maintain diesel fuel inventory.
- Dispense diesel fuel in fleet.
- Maintains washing/cleaning of bus fleet including detailing during the summer months.
- Shall be available after regular hours to assist drivers who experience mechanical failure during athletic events or field trips.
- Provide maintenance support to area bus offices.
- Drives regular bus routes or field trips in times of great need.
Additional Duties:
Performs related duties as assigned by Coordinator of Transportation or designee and Activity Bus Mechanic.
Minimum Education and Training
Requires a high school diploma supplemented by a good driving record and required training, and two to four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess valid state class "B" CDL driver's license with appropriate endorsements; may require specialized training for maintaining buses. Experience working with the public, knowledgeable of minor maintenance repairs, and excellent communication skills
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a school bus. Must be physically able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, push, pull, climb, balance and perform manual tasks. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 150 pounds or more.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication:
Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving directions to students and receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor. Includes the ability to make decisions and makes choices between policies, rules or procedures.
Language Ability:
Requires the ability to read a variety of policy and procedures manuals, maps, driver handbooks, regulations, etc. Requires the ability to prepare various logs and reports accurately. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence:
Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form, and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Requires the ability to make routine independent judgments in absence of supervision and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
Manual Dexterity:
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, and switches. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational backgrounds.
Numerical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to determine time.
Form/Spatial Aptitude:
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
Motor Coordination:
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in operating motor vehicles.
Color Discrimination:
Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing in uncomfortable physical conditions and under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
Physical Communication:
Requires the ability to talk and/or hear with talking defined as expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words and hearing being defined as perceiving nature of sounds by ear.
